NOURISHING TURMERIC SMOOTHIE

It's extremely rare for me to get hit with a summer cold, but here I am snotty-nosed with a sore throat and barely a hint of a voice. In the winter it's easy to comfort a cold with hot soups, teas and tonics, but with 30°C weather, it's not too appealing. And so, my Nourishing Turmeric Smoothie was born.

Turmeric is a fantastic ant-inflammatory spice loaded with antioxidant properties that help make it a great immune booster. I use turmeric a lot at home, but always in savory dishes. Until today, I had been turned off at the thought of how turmeric could taste when paired with fruit. Going in, I knew this smoothie could end up a disaster, but I tried it out anyways (I love experimenting in the kitchen).

What I love about this smoothie (aside from it's vibrant yellow colour and health properties) is that it tastes like tropical bliss with only a faint hit of warm spice - in other words, it's delicious! You get sweetness from the pineapple, creaminess from the banana, warmth from the turmeric, and a splash of zest from the mango - a flavourful way to kick a summer cold!


NOURISHING TURMERIC SMOOTHIE (SERVES 1)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 banana, peeled
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple, including any juice
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric

Directions:

  1. In a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
