Months before I graduated from CSNN, I was creating recipes and writing blog posts. I was behind the scenes getting my business organized and legalities in place. I had everything set up so that the moment I opened that letter from school confirming my R.H.N. designation, all I had to do was click a button and It’s Raining Kale would be live and open to the world.
KNOW WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING – CRICKETS, I TELL YA!
During the first 6 months of business, I really struggled. It became a game of trial and error – each week my website looked different and my packages were constantly changing. I know it’s silly, but I honestly thought I would have a super easy time attracting clients my way. I mean, come on –doesn’t everyone care about their health as much as I do?
In truth – no. At least, not over buying a new home or car, daily Starbucks, eating out, expensive purses and clothing, vacations – you get the picture. I learned that even when someone has a health concern that’s constantly on their mind, they normally don’t view it as an urgent priority. Change is hard for people and your offering has to wow the bejesus out of them to inspire them to invest in themselves (and invest with YOU!).
THIS IS WHERE KNOWING YOUR IDEAL CLIENT AND TARGET MARKET COMES INTO PLAY – THE CRUCIAL INGREDIENT THAT I WAS MISSING.
I did what most holistic nutritionists and health coaches do, which is cater to everyone! We are such passionate entrepreneurs out there to transform people’s lives – why would we want to turn anyone away from that?!
THE TRUTH IS, WHEN YOU APPEAL TO EVERYONE, YOU APPEAL TO NO ONE.
Think about it, if you’re telling everyone “I can help you get healthy” or “I can help you get fit”, or my favourite “Achieve health and balance in your life” – no one cares enough because it’s too general, not relatable and you just blend in with the sea of other health practitioners.
By knowing what your ideal client’s main struggle is, what they’re Googling every night to solve their problem, what solution they’re looking for, what they’ve tried already that hasn’t work, and everything in between, then you know how to effectively market to them and build that know, like, trust factor, so that they start to seek YOU out.
It wasn’t until I knew my target audience inside and out that I started to gain a significantly greater following and interest in my services, and it just keeps growing!
